There is an unfortunate trend to diminish the importance of arts, culture and the humanities. Within the educational space, they are seen as something of a relic, with humanities degrees not up to the task of providing a stable career. And in the entertainment space, the importance of art has steadily given way to the importance of “content”, with more focus placed on schemes for monetization and marketing than on the artistic product itself. And in the future, AI seems to be the most looming threat of all, with a promise of a world where the artist is unnecessary, and consumers can simply remix existing pieces to their heart’s content.

But many still understand the essential importance of art and culture in the modern world. AI generated content only has a goal of trying to please its creators - not challenge them. Only real art can provoke the necessary thought to change a mind or open new perspectives. Art, culture and the humanities also provide a vital human connection that is often lacking in the modern world - they are the real expressions from real people.

It is because of this that there are many nonprofits who are dedicated to keeping the arts, culture and humanities alive in their communities. These nonprofits rely on the funding from arts grants in order to keep culture alive. These grants can come from a variety of sources. Traditionally, these would be from federal agencies such as the National Endowment for the Arts, or the Institute of Museum and Library Services. There are many private foundations that also support culture through art grants, such as the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Ford Foundation.

When preparing proposals to earn arts grants it is important to balance data with your storytelling. It is tempting to make arts grants proposals simply an emotional and evocative plea. But you need to prove that the art you are supporting is going to actually be reaching real people. Statistics on event attendance and community engagement, as well as the positive benefits of cultural participation, are all great places to start.
