We live in an inherently unpredictable world, where disease, disaster and other chaos can happen at a moment’s notice. Even if we only count natural disasters, millions are still affected every year, losing homes, health and even lives. There are many nonprofits dedicated to providing disaster relief and humanitarian aid across the globe to those who need it most. But these nonprofits are only able to do their good work thanks to the generous funding provided by disaster relief grants.

These grants can be put towards a wide range of purposes within the purview of disaster relief. These can include the funding necessary for shelter, food, medical supplies and mental health support. In the longer term, they can also be used for rebuilding projects and reinvigorating the economy of the affected area, as well as helping communities improve their resilience to potential future disasters.

The source of funding from these grants can come from a wide range of sources. Traditionally they would come from federal sources, such as FEMA or USAID. There are also many state and local government programs that provide disaster relief grants designed for their relevant communities. There are also many private foundations in this space, such as the Red Cross. 

When preparing a disaster relief grant proposal, you need to focus on the good that your nonprofit can do, and make the scope of the disaster you are addressing (or hope to address in the future) clear. You may need statistics on the frequency of a particular kind of natural disaster, the number of people a disaster has affected and the amount of economic loss. You can get this data from sources such as FEMA reports, stage emergency management agencies and academic studies.
