It is estimated that roughly 11 million American children live in poverty. Raising children and building a family is a challenge for any American, not even taking this into account. Medical conditions, financial hardship and other unforeseen eventualities can complicate everything. There are many nonprofits that understand this, and whose missions are targeted to aiding average families, particularly single-parent families. 

These nonprofits are only able to do their work through the generous donations provided by family grants. These grants can be put towards a wide range of programs that affect families in some way - parenting classes, early childhood education, family counseling and special services for at-risk or low-income families. 

Family grants may be provided by a wide range of sources. Traditionally these included government agencies like the Department of Health and Human Services, which funded programs such as the Maternal, Infant and Early Childhood Home Visiting Program. There are also many private foundations that may give relevant grants, such as the Annie E. Casey Foundation and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. 

When drafting family grant proposals, it's essential to use data to back up any claims you make. You need to prove that there is a serious deficiency in service, and that your nonprofit is in a position to make a difference. A good place to start collecting family data could include sources such as the U.S. Census Bureau, the Department of Health and Human Services, and organizations like Child Trends.
