In many ways, public safety is the first and foremost concern for communities. If people don’t feel safe in their communities and neighborhoods, they’re less likely to engage in activities within it. A safe community is one that is ready for further investment and growth. However the challenges to public safety can be multitude, and many communities rely on nonprofits in order to help take the public safety load.

These nonprofits are only able to do their good work through the support provided by public safety grants. These grants help pay for a wide range of public safety initiatives and programs. These could include neighborhood watch and community policing initiatives, natural disaster preparedness capacity building or violence prevention seminars. The grants could also go towards technological solutions, such as better surveillance for key community areas, or applications that ease reporting in the community.

Public safety grants can come from a wide range of sources. Traditionally, some federal agencies would provide grants for crime prevention and emergency response programs. Many state and local government agencies will also take on these roles. There are also private foundations, such as the MacArthur Foundation, that provide grants in this area.

When you are preparing a proposal for a public safety grant, data is certainly important. You’ll want to find information on local crime rates, emergency response times, and the community perception on safety to make a case that there is a gap that your nonprofit can address. But don’t forget the human element either. Testimonials of those affected by gaps in public safety, or helped by your nonprofit in the past, will make for a stronger public safety grant proposal.
