The visual arts encompasses a wide range of artistic traditions, across all kinds of mediums and cultures. These are often essential parts of both our specific and collective cultural heritages. However, the creation of the visual arts, of all kinds, does not come free. Artists need wages to live, as well as money for materials - and venues need to be able to afford said art. While some artists can make it full time at their work, in order for the full breadth of artistic expression to be supported, nonprofits often need to lend a hand.

These artistic nonprofits are only able to do what they do thanks to the generous funding provided by visual arts grants. These grants can cover a wide range of initiatives, including funding for exhibitions, educational programs to promote the visual arts, conservation of visual arts collections and paying for artist residencies and fellowships. 

There are a wide range of organizations that provide visual arts grants. Traditionally this included federal organizations such as the National Endowment for the Arts. There are also many private foundations involved in this space, such as the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the Kresge Foundation

When drafting a visual arts grant proposal,  it's essential to use data to back up your argument for the importance of your nonprofit. This could include potential audience demographics in your region, or the potential revenue. But you need to be an evocative storyteller as well, demonstrating a clear enthusiasm for the visual arts, and explaining clearly how your nonprofit can help promote them in your area.
